However, I implore to read my opinion on the state of residential and commercial move in Ontario. Let’s face it, one of the most stressful things any person will ever undertake in life, other than public speaking, is having to move. Everything from the incredibly difficult task of looking for a place that you can afford to figuring out what you should keep in your current home and what you probably have to get rid of. Then, you may even have to buy some more furniture if you’re moving into a bigger space because of a growing family. All of these issues start to add up in terms of time and stress, not to mention money! The worst part about all of this is that you have no choice but to go through this chaos because, well, you have to move. And this is where the big moving companies really take advantage of you. Most moving companies are going to charge exorbitant fees because they know you’re in a situation where you have to move and you probably don’t have the luxury of time to go out and properly shop around. Here’s another reason why the bigger moving companies charge a lot more than they have to for their services: Their overhead is absolutely monstrous and they want you to pay for it.

I know this because I spent some time working in the industry for another big moving company with a well known brand name. It’s a huge franchise with many locations not only in Ontario, but all over the world. The first day I interviewed with them, I had to go to the main location close to Yorkdale mall. I was amazed at how much people worked there that had nothing to do with the actual job of moving people’s possessions. You had two operations managers, Customer service people answering the phone, a few movers working in the office (doing God knows what, but definitely not moving people) and I believe a receptionist at the front. It was amazing to see that, considering that out of the $190 per hour/per mover that this company would charge their clients, only $20 per hour on average, would go to the people who are actually doing the work of moving your valuable possessions to your new home.

I then worked at another location for the same company where the owner interviewed me. During the course of the interview, he listed the myriad of expenses that he has to pay out on a monthly basis. Everything from franchise fees to hefty truck payments and auto insurance to go with it. The rental of warehouse space, Google advertising and so on. My point is, why should the customer have to bear the brunt of these bloated company’s expenses with moving fees that are out of whack to what the job at hand is? At One Man And A Van, we keep expenses at a minimum by cutting out the fat and preserving the ‘lean cut’ of service for you at a much reduced price. We don’t own a whole fleet of trucks that have to be maintained, or have huge amounts of employees that don’t have anything to do with the moving process. And, not to get twisted, the service is still top rate in terms of getting your valuable possessions transported safely to your new home, with a smile.
